Our art collection is at the heart of all school sessions at the Victoria Art Gallery. We aim to ignite pupil’s curiosity, enthusiasm and skill through art. Pupils will be encouraged to develop their observation and drawing skills in whole class, small groups and by individual work.

Face to Face

Explore portraits and proportion

Session time: 90 mins

 

Discover paintings by famous artists like Hans Holbein. Explore themes of identity and difference how artists represent physical and emotional worlds through portraiture. Learn how paintings tell stories of the people in them

In this hands-on practical workshop pupils will use their creativity to develop drawing skills to make an art piece they can take home.

In this workshop your pupils will: 

• Learn to identify features in a face 

• Use discussion, observation and sketching in order to learn 

• Gain experience in simple drawing techniques for faces

• Explore collage techniques for creating textures including hair and clothes

Landscape & the Environment

Landscape & the Environment

Discovering natural landscapes and urban environments

Session time: 90 mins 

 

Discover paintings and objects by famous artists like Paul Klee. Explore themes of landscape in the natural and urban world to investigate topics such as climate change and biodiversity and how we affect and change our environment. 

In this hands-on practical workshop pupils will use their creativity to develop drawing skills to make an art piece they can take home.

 

In this workshop your pupils will: 

• Learn to identify a range of landscapes in artworks and recognise rural and urban environments.

• Evaluate and analyse artworks using the language of art, craft and design 

• Know about great artists, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms 

• Use discussion, observation and sketching in order to learn 

• Practice techniques for creating perspective, drawing buildings and natural forms

Focus on sculpture

Session time: 90 mins 

 

Discover 3D sculpture from our collection including artworks of William Harbutt inventor of plasticine and world-famous ceramic artist Grayson Perry. 

Pupils will develop key inquiry skills and take away a deeper understanding of how artists such as Grayson Perry represent relevant themes in 3D form.

Pupils will discover how to identify a sculpture, learn how they are made including a variety of techniques and methods including carving, casting and modelling and materials.

In this hands-on practical workshop, pupils will make their own sculptures from clay to take home.

 

In this workshop your pupils will: 

• Learn to identify a range of sculptures and establish the difference between a 2D and 3D artwork

• Evaluate and analyse artworks using the language of art, craft and design

• Know about great artists, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms 

• Use discussion, observation and sketching in order to learn 

• Become proficient in simple sculpture techniques 

• Explore techniques for creating textures including fur, feathers and hair
