We love welcoming families to the Victoria Art Gallery and have lots of free activities for families to take part in during your visit.

The free-to-visit art in the Upper Gallery is full of animals, kings and queens and other interesting subjects to discover with children. You will find colouring sheets based on pictures in the gallery and can explore the exhibitions with one of our fun filled trails. Our volunteers give out stickers for children when they have completed the trails.

Is the Gallery family friendly?

We are a family friendly Gallery with exciting exhibitions, artworks and activities for you to explore with your family. Families can participate in free inspiring and creative activities during school holidays developed specifically for you. Our Upper Gallery (re-opening 2024) has wonderful art to discover together, colouring sheets and trails to help you explore. There are stickers too, just ask the volunteer for one!

But don’t just take our word for it, here is what some of our family visitors have to say….

  • “Lovely art gallery with some fantastic paintings and information surrounding them. Had activities for children during my visit, so I was happily able to enjoy the museum in relative peace” Ace, Google Reviews.

Feedback from family creative activities:

  • “The kids loved creating their own version of the candlesticks downstairs! Brilliant materials and much to choose from, thank you.”

  • “We loved the activity today and the range of materials available. The various activities are always well thought out and the whole family enjoy it. We love the Victoria Art Gallery.”

  • “Wonderful session for little artists. Guided just enough, with freedom to create different pictures.”

  • “Working as a private nanny I find all these activities perfect for the children I look after. They are able to explore their creativity in a welcoming environment and the leaders in charge are helpful and positive. Lots of resources available for children to use and take the activity to their own level. Highly recommended!”

Are buggies allowed in the Victoria Art Gallery?

Buggies are allowed in the whole building. There is a level access available to the right of the main doors. The lift is next to the ticket desk and suitable for a maximum of 8 people, or 4 people standing and one buggy.

During exhibition changeover in the Lower Gallery there may be some restrictions on using the level entrance. Take a look at our exhibition schedule here. Please call the Gallery on 01225 477233 to check and we will try to accommodate your access needs.

What facilities do you have for families?

There is level access to all galleries and facilities via the accessible entrance on Bridge Street, opposite Mallory’s jewellers.

The ground and first floors can be accessed via the ramped entrance on Bridge Street. The push pad button is to the left of the door. Pressing the button will automatically open the door, once pressed, stand well back on the pavement to clear the area as the doors open outward. Please transfer across the Lower Gallery to the front desk to collect a ticket.

There is an accessible toilet on the first floor, next to the lift entrance. This is large enough for a buggy and contains a baby change station. There are also booster steps available for young children.

We welcome breastfeeding on site. In the Upper Gallery there are green chairs you can use or in the Lower Gallery we have folding chairs available, please ask the front desk and they will get you one.

Where can we eat?

The Gallery does not have a café and politely requests that no food is consumed in the building.

There are many places to eat around the Gallery, or you can pick up some picnic items in the Guildhall Market next door to take to the park.

We are 150m from Parade Gardens with excellent views of Pulteney Bridge and the Avon River. It is free for Discovery Card holders. Tickets can be bought at the gate, see the website for prices.

We are 300m from Henrietta Park, which is free.

We are 650m from Sydney Gardens, also free, with an incredible new play area. It's the perfect place for a picnic and play on a sunny day.

How accessible is the Gallery?

We have good accessibility with level access throughout most of the building.

We have a sensory bag available. It contains ear defenders, squishy toy, fidget toy, cuddly toy and communication fan.

To find out more about access at the Gallery, please visit our accessibility page.
