Exterior of Victoria Art Gallery on Bridge Street, Bath

Victoria Art Gallery is the public art museum in Bath. It is run by Bath & North East Somerset Council and houses its collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative arts.

The building was designed in 1897 by John McKean Brydon, and has been designated as a Grade II listed building. The exterior of the building includes a statue of Queen Victoria, by Andrea Carlo Lucchesi, and friezes of classical figures by G. A. Lawson.

The Gallery was named to celebrate Queen Victoria's sixty years on the throne. It includes over 1,500 decorative arts treasures, including a display of British oil paintings from 17th century to the present day with works by Thomas Gainsborough, Thomas Jones Barker and Walter Sickert.

Jobs and Volunteering

Current vacancies will be advertised here and on the Bath & North East Somerset Council website.

Volunteering opportunities

We see volunteers as an integral part of the Front of House team, helping us to maintain our opening hours and free entry to our public collection. The warm welcome and knowledgeable service they provide helps enhance the visitor experience and the involvement of community members is a welcome addition to the gallery.

If you have an interest in art, an aptitude for dealing with the public and the availability to commit to at least one shift a month, your assistance could be invaluable to us.

If you'd like to find out further details about volunteering, please email us or call 01225 477233.

Accreditations

The Victoria Art Gallery is an accredited art museum.
Registered Museum

The Museum Registration Scheme was established in 1988 and the Victoria Art Gallery was registered in 1990. In 2004, the Scheme was renamed Accreditation to better reflect its purpose and the achievements of those museums which meet the standards it sets out.

Accreditation recognises the steps that the Victoria Art Gallery takes to meet the needs of today’s visitors, while at the same time safeguarding their collections for future generations.
Under the scheme the Victoria Art Gallery is required to provide:

  • opportunities to use, enjoy and learn from the collections
  • an assurance that the collections, including donated items, are held in trust for society
  • information about the museum, its collections and its services
  • a commitment to consultation with users, to ensure that future developments and changes take account of their needs and interests
  • appropriate visitor facilities or details about facilities nearby.
Customer Service Excellence Award

Bath & North East Somerset Council, which owns and manages the Victoria Art Gallery, has been awarded the Customer Service Excellence Award for the quality of the Gallery's services. The Customer Service Excellence Award is designed to measure how well a service responds to its customers' needs and it is only available to local government organisations.

The award recognises the influence of visitors in the Gallery's future. There is a user group that offers regular recommendations and comments. Visitors also curate the periodic "People's Shows" mounted by the Gallery from items in its own collection. Frequent customer surveys measure the quality of the visitor experience and feedback from all users is encouraged.

If you have any suggestions or comments on this website, please e-mail us.

VAQAS

The Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Scheme is managed by VisitEngland and encourages improvements in the visitor experience through its network of regional assessors, one of whom makes a visit to the site annually. The assessor follows the entire customer journey, including marketing and promotion, visitor information pre-arrival, the site itself, the toilet facilities, shops and café or restaurant. The Victoria Art Gallery receives a debrief and written report from the assessor and uses it as a tool to make changes to the visitor experience.
