Christmas at the Victoria Art Gallery

Press release
10 November 2022
Enjoy a visit to the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath this winter, where you can see paintings of snowy local scenes, admire the artist-designed Christmas tree, and make a wintery self-portrait at the family craft session.

Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “This winter is a great time to explore the Victoria Art Gallery, whether you’re looking around the brilliant Peter Brown exhibition, taking part in family activities, or simply popping in to buy Christmas cards in the shop. Don’t forget that local residents can enjoy free admission to all the Gallery’s exhibitions with a Discovery Card.”

Victoria Art Gallery Christmas tree

Each year, the Friends of the Victoria Art Gallery invite a different artist to design a Christmas tree for the Gallery’s foyer. This year’s tree will be designed by artist Angel Greenham (www.angelgreenham.co.uk).

Inspired by Christmas traditions and works on display in the Gallery, the tree’s design will encourage the viewer to slow down and observe light and shadow. An original audio piece has been created by composer Gavriel Rubin (www.gavrielrubin.com).

The tree will be unveiled on 24 November, to coincide with the launch of Bath’s famous Christmas Market, which will transform the city centre with 150 twinkling chalets from 24 November to 11 December (www.bathchristmasmarket.co.uk).

Family activity: All Wrapped Up

Saturday 10 December, 11am to 2.30pm

Use print and collage to create a winter self-portrait wearing hats, scarves and gloves. Suitable for ages 3+.

Free activity, no need to book.

Peter Brown: Bath, Bristol and Beyond

Peter Brown: Bath, Bristol and Beyond features over 100 new oil paintings by the ever-popular Bath-based artist ‘Pete the Street’, including many local scenes.

Peter Brown is widely acclaimed as one of Britain’s best plein air painters and his atmospheric views are captured in all weathers, even during snowstorms when he works outside wearing fingerless mittens.

Among the wintery Bath scenes are paintings of the snow-covered Circus, sun on the melting snow in Gay Street, snow-covered roofs painted from St Stephen’s Road, and the Christmas tree outside Bath Abbey. The exhibition runs until 15 January.

The Adoration of the Magi

This is the perfect time of year to come and admire The Adoration of the Magi. Celebrating the birth of baby Jesus, this beautiful painting depicts the Christmas story. Dating from around 1480 it is one of the oldest and most important works in the Gallery’s collection. In the new year it will be heading to Berlin, to be included in a major exhibition.

Victoria Art Gallery shop

The Victoria Art Gallery shop sells a lovely variety of original gifts and stocking fillers, from stationery and art materials to jewellery and children’s books, plus a popular range of Christmas cards.

To coincide with the Peter Brown exhibition, there’s also a choice of Peter Brown products on offer, including prints, calendars, books and exhibition catalogues.
