Lighting in the permanent collection

Bath & North East Somerset Council is committed to addressing the causes and effects of climate change and is a Beacon Council for Waste.

  • To minimise its impact on the environment the Victoria Art Gallery separates its waste into recyclables (plastic, glass, paper, cardboard) and non-recyclables. In the interest of energy efficiency, the large gallery on the first floor dedicated to the permanent collection is entirely lit by a mixture of LED spotlights and daylight.
  • Instead of water fountains, a filtration and cooling system is linked to the cold water supply in order to provide safe, locally sourced drinking water for the benefit of staff and volunteers. Taps in the public toilets are movement-controlled and switch off automatically, thus saving water.
  • Commuting to the Gallery by bicycle is encouraged through the Council’s membership of the national Cyclescheme, which makes new bicycles available to staff via a tax-efficient hire scheme.
  • Our shop uses recyclable paper bags and 100% biodegradable carrier bags.
  • By law we charge 5p for all single use plastic bags. The aim is to reduce the use of plastic bags and the litter associated with them. All proceeds go to the Friends of the Victoria Art Gallery.
