Leave a gift in your will

Help fund the future of the Victoria Art Gallery.

After you’ve taken care of your family and loved ones, you may wish to think about leaving a gift in your will to the Friends of the Victoria Art Gallery. Since 1900, the Victoria Art Gallery has intrigued, inspired and educated millions of visitors. A gift in your will of any size will ensure the Victoria Art Gallery continues to do so for another 100 years.

Your gift could:

  • Help us care for, and grow our stunning collection of paintings, sculpture and decorative art dating from the 15th century to the present day
  • Keep the gallery a vital component of Bath’s cultural life in the future
  • Enrich people’s lives through ambitious exhibitions and memorable learning programmes.

What kind of gift could I leave to the Victoria Art Gallery?

You may wish to consider:

  • A cash sum
  • A percentage of your estate – as little as 1% of your estate can make a difference to us
  • An item – please tell us what object or works you intend to leave, so we can see if it is appropriate for our collection.

You can find out more about some of the generous bequests and gifts to the Gallery on the gifts and bequest page.

Who will look after my gift?

The Trustees of the Friends of the Victoria Art Gallery will be the custodians of your gift. They will ensure your wishes are met.

“We welcome gifts in wills of all sizes. The Trustees of the Friends of the Victoria Art Gallery will look after your gift until we are ready to use it as per your wishes. We’ve used previous gifts to improve our displays, programme exemplary temporary exhibitions and acquire new works of art for our wonderful collection.” Jon Benington, Victoria Art Gallery Manager.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I update and amend my will?

Updating your will to include a gift to us is easy. Ask your solicitor or professional will writer to make amendments at any time. Depending on the changes you wish to make to your will, it might be possible for you to use a codicil to make your amendments.

I haven’t written my will yet, where do I start?

There are a number of ways to write a will. You can use a solicitor, a will writing service or you can complete one yourself using new online services. We are not able to provide legal advice about your will. We recommend seeking legal advice from a solicitor. Visit the Money Advice Service website for further information about making a will. You can search for a solicitor on the Law Society’s website.

What about Inheritance Tax?

At the moment, if you leave a gift to us in your will it will not be included when valuing your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. The value of your gift will be deducted from your estate before Inheritance Tax is applied. Inheritance Tax rules may change, so your solicitor can best advise you.

What can I expect from the Victoria Art Gallery and the Friends of the Victoria Art Gallery?

Your privacy and confidentiality is very important to us. We will never ask you for the details of your will. If you’re considering leaving a gift in your will to us, we won’t put you under any pressure, and will respect that this is a decision you want to make in your own time. If you do decide to include a gift in your will, or have done already, please let us know so we can thank you and show you how your gift will make a difference to us. You can also tell us how you would like us to use your gift and we will honour this where possible. We will spend your gift wisely.
