Artists Exhibition details announced

June 2011

The next Bath Society of Artists 106th Summer Exhibition will be hosted by Bath & North East Somerset Council at the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath from 11 June - 16 July 2011.

Our most popular fixture, this massive selling exhibition assembles the cream of regional artistic talent. Any artist aged 18 or over may submit work for possible selection and winning of a prize. See their website for details at http://www.bsartists.co.uk/ or go to http://www.victoriagal.org.uk/

The exhibition will be opening by the President of the Society, contemporary artist, David Inshaw, in the presence of The Mayor of Bath.

A number of prizes are up for grabs including the new £2000 Victoria Prize, the Bristol Guild Prize of £200 for a 3-D work and the Harry Walker Young Artist Prize of £250, awarded to artists aged 18-25.  There are also smaller prizes for graphics, watercolour and small paintings and a £100 framing prize from the Meltone Gallery, Bath.

Bath & North East Somerset Council Gallery Manager, Jon Benington, said “Visitors can prepare to be dazzled by the talent and sheer diversity of the works that will be on display, all of which are for sale.”

During the exhibition members of the public will be invited to vote for their favourite piece of work, with the winner of the People’s Choice Award receiving £500.`

To enter, entrants must be over 18, pay a small entry fee and submit their work on Saturday 4 June.  All work must be the artists own original unaided work. They may be paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints or mixed media, but not photography or Giclee reproductions

There is also a programme of free talks on Saturday afternoons from 2.30-3.15 by members of the society to compliment the exhibition. The first talk will be held on 18 June with A Sculptor’s Approach by Deborah van der Beek,  on 25 June A Painter’s Approach with Neil Murison and on Saturday 9 July, A Printmaker’s Approach with Peter Davies.

The Society was founded in October 1904 with 26 members. It has grown over the years to a membership of around 120 diverse, talented artists

The annual exhibition, which is open to non-members, attracts about 1,000 entries and over 14,000 visitors, with sales doubling in the last few years.

Many distinguished 20th-century painters have exhibited with the Society including Walter Sickert, John Singer Sargent, Philip Wilson Steer, Gilbert Spencer, Patrick Heron, Mary Fedden, William Scott and Howard Hodgkin.

The Victoria Art Gallery, near Pulteney Bridge in Bath, is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm, Sunday 1.30pm to 5pm. The Gallery is closed on Monday. Admission is free.
