Saved for Ever – Gallery gifts
and purchases
8 October – 27
November 2011
The contribution made by the hundreds of
people who have generously donated works of art to the gallery is
enormous. Many of the most loved pictures on display once
hung in the houses of local people. These individuals gave
their paintings to us so that they could be enjoyed by the public,
for ever.

Great works of art
Few people are lucky enough to have great art
on display in their homes. We, like many other public
galleries up and down the country, are here to ensure that art can
be seen and enjoyed by everyone.
Bath
Artists have been painting views of Bath for
many decades. Their work provides an invaluable record of how
the city has changed and developed over the past three
centuries.
Conservation
Works of art need to be looked
after. Watercolours can fade , the varnish on oil paintings
becomes yellow and dirty with age The exhibition includes a
half restored picture demonstrating some of the
conservation problems we have and how they are solved.
Recent Purchases
Although we still receive occasional
donations, most of the works entering our collection now have been
bought. We think carefully before buying, keenly aware that
we are spending public money. We aim to buy works that are
relevant to our existing collection, that will add to, rather than
duplicate what we already have
